Discover Your Purpose

The secret of change is to focus all of your energy,

not on fighting the old, but on building the new."

Socrates

Change is happening at an incredible rate all around us. If we are not intentional, we can be overcome by the demands on our time, energy and resources. To keep our compass pointed on target and our relationships healthy and satisfying even in the midst of constant change, we must FOCUS on our purpose. Successful giants like Warren Buffeet and Bill Gates agree that focus is the one of the secrets to success. The importance of focus, purpose, and intentional action is supported by 1 Corinthians 9:26 TLB.

I run straight to the goal with purpose in every step. I fight to win.

I'm not just shadow-boxing or playing around.

How do we DISCOVER our purpose? Purpose is the reason behind what we do or create. We all have more than 1 purpose, but when we take the time to focus our lives on a limited number of clearly-defined purposes, we can make progress.

"Change is inevitable; progress is optional."

Tony Robbins

Here is a 5 Step Process to find your purpose:

F - Find Your Passion and Purpose. We find fulfillment, excitement, and success as we achieve our dreams and goals. Your dreams and desires point the way to what you should spend your time on.

O - Organize your goals. Write down 25 things you would like to accomplish before the end of your life. There is tremendous power of words over thoughts and even more power of the written word over the spoken word. Once the list is written down, it can be refined and improved. This moves it from the realm of best intentions to the realm of coming into reality.

C - Clarify and measure. After you have the list of 25 ideas, select the Big 5. Write each one of these into a clear goal with details that allow for measurement (timeframes, quantities, locations, etc). As we add in the details, the vision becomes a measureable goal and allows us to evaluate and adjust as we proceed. We break down each goal into small doable tasks that build upon each other. I also like to include milestones along the way to the final product so we can celebrate successes along the way to the final accomplishment.

U - Undivided attention to the Big 5. In order to assign our time, resources and money appropriately, we need to marry our Big 5. We avoid the other twenty at all cost so they do not siphon off what is needed for the Big 5.

S - Stay Positive along the journey. As we focus on our Top 5 purposes/ goals, we will run into obstacles, hindrances, and failures. Successful people choose to stay positive and regroup if necessary, and then press on in their journey. Staying positive also allows us to take the time for reflection and learn from our success and failures along the way.
